1000 competitors were joined by Scottish Minister for Sport Patricia Ferguson, Chair of the Millennium Commission and Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn, Duke of Gloucester and five-time gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave.

After oaths were read by athletes, officials and volunteers an audience of 3000 watched a musical, acrobatic masterpiece linking themes and images of the UK School Games.
