England South West representative Erin Jeffery destroys the field to win gold in the women's 800m freestyle
Second day summary
9 September 2006, 3:08 pm
THE FIRST day of the athletics went with the form book as 100m favourites Olufunmi Sobudu and Ashlee Nelson came through their qualifying heats with flying colours at the UK School Games in Glasgow.

Stoke’s Nelson finished over 0.3 seconds ahead of her competition when Heat one of the Women’s 100m was finally completed – the heat initially abandoned when four competitors ran the distance after failing to hear the gun to indicate a false start.

Worthing runner Sobudu was in equally impressive form as he booked his place in Sunday’s final, declaring that he expects to win the contest after finishing half a second ahead of the rest in his heat.

The home-grown stars had a day to savour, with Glasgow favourite Chris Bennett landing the day’s first gold medal when he recovered from a poor start to land the men’s hammer. There were more loud cheers from a partisan home crowd when Suzanne Begg and Carly Beattie came first in their heats to reach the respective women’s 100m and 200m finals, with Nicola Campbell gaining a place in the women’s 300m final.

The men enjoyed similar success, with Sean Watson, Stuart McIlreavy and Connor Hill reaching the 400m, 400m hurdles and 100m finals respectively.

In the swimming, Aimee Wilmott proved that age is no barrier as she took the 400m Individual Medley title. At just 14-year-old, Wilmott was at least one year younger than all her competitors – but stormed to victory in a time of 5.03.18.

Meanwhile, there was plenty for the Glasgow crowd to cheer as homegrown hopeful Rebecca Hillis bagged the breaststroke double. Hillis, 16, was in supreme form, taking both the 100m and 200m crowns in times of 1.13.56 and 2.36.53 respectively. But there was disappointment for Peter Thompson in the butterfly.

The Middlesbrough-born swimmer was red-hot favourite to take double gold in the fly event. However, the 16-year-old had to settle for just silver in the 200m while missing out on a medal altogether in the 100m, finishing a heartbreaking fourth place.

Scotland’s Daniel Scott was the king of the speedsters, taking the coveted 50m freestyle event in a lighting time of 24.48 seconds.

Highly-rated Enfield gymnast Reiss Beckford was in supreme form to take the all round title, but was pushed all the way by England team mates Sam Oldham and Reece Pearson. The England squad also took both the men and women’s team successes, but the individual women’s honour went to Wales’ Bryl Olivia - beating off competition from four chasing English contestants.

There were six exciting finals in the fencing competitions with Abbi Matthews, Laura Delany and Sophie Williams emerging victorious in the women’s competitions.

The trio of men’s competitions also provided terrific excitement for the crowd with Ben White, Tom Potterton and Alex Crutchett celebrating victory.

The table tennis team competitions also continued today, with the North of England team, headed by Paul Drinkhall, emerging victorious in the men’s division with a comfortable 4-0 victory over the East Midlands. There was also a whitewash in the women’s final as England West Midlands outplayed England South East by the same score line.
