A young Motherwell athlete has stormed to her second successive victory at the London marathon.

British swimmer Lizzie Simmonds has praised the UK School Games for giving student athletes the chance to experience multi-events, something she will encounter for the first time ever this August at the Olympic Games.

Around 1,200 pupils from 16 Bristol schools took part in the inaugural Bristol Festival of School Sport; a community programme integral to the 2008 Bristol and Bath UK School Games.

The UK School Games in Bristol and Bath take place between the 28th and 31st August this year, and with Hockey added to the competitive programme as the ninth sport it promises to be biggest event yet.

Twelve Young Ambassadors from School Sport Partnerships within Bath and Bristol last week gathered together at Bath University to explore their involvement in the 2008 UK School Games.

Details of the event, which will be the first in the London Olympiad following the end of the Beijing Olympics, were announced at a press conference in Bath today, where Olympic gold medallist Jason Gardener was joined by young fencer Sophie Williams, also from the South West, who has won double gold at both previous UK School Games.
