Deji Tobias
Sporting Highlights - Day Three
31 August 2008, 9:15 pm
UK School Games brings you the highlights from the final day of competition.
SHARNBROOK College's Deji Tobias reckons he has the potential to catch triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt after he won gold in the 100m final.

The 16-year-old sprinter is gunning for the new Olympic Champion after clinching top spot on the podium in 10.68 seconds.
And although he has almost a second to make up on Bolt’s world record of 9.68 seconds, Tobias has his sights set on catching the Jamaican and taking his title.

“I think what Bolt did in Beijing was amazing,” he said, “To be honest he is a freak but there are always going to be freaks in this sport.
“But eventually there has to be another freak that comes along who is as good as he is.“I look up to him and I will definitely use him as an example to better my own style.

“One day I want to break his record but right now it feels fantastic to be a gold medallist at the UK School Games.”
Benytta Doman from Gwynllyw School in Pontypool stole the show in the girls 800m with a time of 2:09.95 – just a year after finishing last in the same event.

She said, “Winning this medal means so much to me and I wanted to win it so bad and now that I have I am so overjoyed to have won.”
Ysgol syr Hugh Owen pupil Brea Leung smashed her discus record from last year’s competition by five metres with a throw of 39.05 metres to claim the gold and beat her PB by a metre and a half.

Away from the athletics, British table tennis number two Darius Knight crashed out of his last sixteen clash with team mate Alim Hiriji losing 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 5-11.

The 18-year-old narrowly missed out on a trip to Beijing this summer and won bronze at the UK School Games two years ago and then clinched silver last year.

Guildford County School’s Sam Dobson was king of the badminton court with golds in the mixed doubles with Emily Westwood, the singles and the boys doubles alongside Steven Cappleman.

Scottish duo Kirsty Gilmour and Kirsty McGlynn took the top prize in the girls doubles and Roundwood Park pupil Westwood doubling her tally with gold in the girls singles.

The boy’s team fencing titles went to England in the sabre, Scotland in the foil and it was victory for Scotland in the epée as they edged past England.

But it was all change in the girls event as Scotland took the foil and Sophie Williams finally got her hand on a medal in the sabre after missing out in the individual on Saturday.
