As part of the build up to the UK School Games we are going to profile a competitor from each sport. To kick off the series we focus in on Fencer Peter Barwell from Kent.
Eighteen year old Peter Barwell of Chatham, Kent is one of 96 fencing athletes who have been announced to compete at the 2009 UK School Games.
Barwell will fence against the UK's teenage elite in the Men's Foil event, being held at the University of Wales in Cardiff from 3-6 September.
"I congratulate Peter and everyone who made the fencing squads, for their determination in achieving a place at the UK School Games. This will no doubt be the most important performance of their sporting careers so far," said Darren Campbell, the UK School Games Ambassador.
"Reaching the UK School Games is the closest a young person can get to competing at the Olympics.
"Competitors will experience their own Opening Ceremony, Closing Ceremony and Athletes' Village in South Wales. I'll be there watching Peter and his fellow athletes be the best that they can be," he said.
Barwell is a student at Chatham Grammar School For Boys and he trains four times a week in London and Tonbridge to keep his fencing skills at a nationally competitive level. He also cycles, runs and swims in order to heighten his fitness.
This is the third year that Barwell has competed in the UK School Games, with 2008 seeing him win silver.
"I feel excited to be able to compete in the UK School Games for a third time, and not having won gold before has made me more determined to win it this time," Barwell said.
"I find it a compliment that Olympic champion Darren Campbell will be watching my performance," he said.
